Garlic has not swelled (Solent White)
« on: June 10, 2009, 09:15 »
I've pulled my garlic as the tops had died back. Of the 3 varieties I've grown, 2 have done OKish, but the third, Solent White (bought at a Wyevale Garden Centre) has not swelled at all. Plenty of leaves and strong growth, but the 'bulb' is no more than a fat stem with roots (just looks like a thick paintbrush).

All sown last autumn and survived the frosts, and was hoping for a bumper crop. Soil is well drained and fertile. Growing in Cheshire.

Has anyone else had problems with this variety from Wyevale? I think it might be poor seed -- what do you think?

I too planted Solent Wight in modules in late November and then planted out when the raised bed was ready. The tops are not yet totally yellowing but I see few signs of bulb development. My seed didn't come from Wyevale - came from Dobies. I'll watch this thread with interest.

me too!
Albigensian fine, solent pants. Might wait a bit later though as they are not totally withered yet.

I planted over-wintering Purple Wight and the leaves are starting to yellow, though not wither.

I'm having the same problem - the bulbs don't seem to be forming although the plants are a great size.

I'm wondering if I should give them a feed once a week or not? I mostly have tomato feed or comfrey tea or general liquid seaweed and I'm not sure it's appropriate for garlic.

Solent Wight is not usually ready to harvest until early July. I have had bumper crops from this variety the last 2 years.

Having said that mine haven't swelled up yet, although I can't remember when they start to form the bulbs.

my Solent Wights are not ready either and won't be for some time yet I don't think. it says on the blurb they're a spring planting variety so I'll be leaving them for a while yet, probably end of July ish

Mine also haven't swelled yet, but I planted them a bit late and they still have green healthy looking stems and leaves. Bit worried tho...
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Solent Wight is a soft neck garlilc and best results are from a spring planting and is the one most commonly seen plaited.

I planted garlic last November and all are still going well and no wilting. Seems a bit early to be pulling garlic as I would not have expected them to be ready until at least a months time and probably two months.
