If you buy an autumn fruiting variety they will both grow canes and fruit this year.

These are called primocane varieties.

We grow Polka, which have huge berries and gave us a couple of kilos from nine canes in their first year. Last year of course they multiplied (as you expect) and we had as many raspberries as we wanted  :D (Bought them in Homebase, 3 to a pot)

does it say if they are a summer or an autumn fruiting variety? - if autumn you will get fruit this year, if summer it will fruit next year on this years growth (so don't chop any 'canes' which haven't fruited :0)
a quick search on the variety should tell you which they are  :D

Aldis usually have some cheap canes (usually summer varieties) and they grow just fine as well

You are right to check the p&p

Cheapest option is always bare root plants, which are readily available this time in the year  :D

No giving up allowed.

You could go and ask someone on your site if you could have some off shoots. They usually have loads

Good luck

It's really stupid, those costs.

You can send a 20kg parcel to the Channel Islands via Royal Mail for less than that!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's usually not so much the postage as the 'handling'. Sometimes you can see why it costs so much, other times it's sheer ripoff.
