carlin peas
« on: June 02, 2012, 21:06 »
(I searched this forum before asking)

Anyone know how high Carlin peas grow please?   I grew 2 plants last year by lashing them to a cane stuck in a bucket, so they stood on end whether they wanted to or not  ::)

I seem to remember that they wernt that tall (3 foot high?) but they were weak plants which I sowed late and neglected and I only got 3 ripe pods off them.  This year's sowing from last year's peas looks much more lively. 100% germination = 18 plants.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

They appear to be a heritage variety and not widely available.

If you have some dried seed then that should do the trick.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

So it would seem, i've been looking for a while.

If you have some dried seed then that should do the trick.

That looks like my most potentially fruitful course so far.  Thanks for the pointers Yorkie.

£8 all in? Ouch. Maybe i can split them into packets and sell them to recoup some of the outlay.  :)

sounds a good plan, as long as you don't try to sell them on this Forum, cos it's not allowed  ;)

Carlins are a traditional Easter dish in Cumbria. The pubs used to dish em out free in bowls with black pepper and vinegar on Passion Sunday, otherwise known as Carlin Sunday. Carlin Sunday was usually followed by F**ting Monday

Same here in the NE, but can you lay your hands on them easily? Nope, they're all but forgotten unless you remind peeps of a certain age.

as my post has been bumped I will give an update on heights.  Same batch of seeds, sown at the same time in pots and planted out.

on allotment =  3 ft high
on patio in bucket = 7 foot high and still climbing strongly.

(The patio batch are to save for seed as they are not near any other peas)

Obviously a late pea as they have only just started flowering.
