Plastic greenhouse ruined
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:47 »
Early spring I bought one of those cheap 6 ft X 4 ft plastic zip up greenhouses. It enabled me for the first time to grow things early on and did the job fine. However, a little cat that has attached itself to us started climbing up it to sit on the warm roof in the sun. I kept patching it up with repair tape. Then the zip started to come away from the plastic and slowly it has deteriorated. I now go outside and the whole roof has a great big hole both ends and it's had it. No tape can repair this. I think the strong winds finished it off.

Ok, I paid £20 for it but I thought it could have lasted a bit longer. The plasic has also become hard and quite brittle.

As I am not in the position to buy another real greenhouse, are there any options as it would be a shame to waste the frame. Can I get stronger plastic that will fit it and be more cat proof ?

Really upset as I have stuff overwintering in it.

You can get replacement covers for them (about a tenner I think)  but they'll probably be the same quality. I use a couple of these things,as you say they aren't that strong generally but I've had some for three growing seasons that are still usable - however i dismantle mine each autumn.

If you get another cover try and put twigs/string/netting etc over the top to make it too uncomfortable for the cat to use, it'll soon find somewhere else warm.

This is the same kind as I already have that failed. I would need something stronger.

Can you make a replacement cover out of polytunnel plastic? You can get a small amount of that on eBay without having to buy a whole big roll.

We've got one, it's on it's second cover and that has ripped the same as the first. They really are cheap and nasty but no-one seems to make a non-cheap-and-nasty version!
Blimey! You mean you can *grow* things in soil?

Wilko sell the replacement covers at about £7. I get a new cover every other year which is not bad. If you pack them up in the winter they last a bit longer. Some go brittle but some are longer lasting depending on how soft the plastic.

Generally the problem here is with the cover, not the frame.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
