Winter Squashes

Seen a couple of referrences recently to winter squashes. What are they and are they winter hardy?

I think you'll find the reference is more to the thick skinned squashes that are harvested late autumn, but will store into winter, rather than plants that will grow over winter.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yup they are things like pumpkins, butternuts and turks turbans etc.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

It's to show the difference between summer squashes, like small pattipans and courgettes, and the winter squashes like pumpkins etc. Winter ones store, summer ones don't.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.
