Newbie question - Will they over-winter?
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:25 »
I sowed swede (Joan) and caulis (all-year) a bit late - in August I think (must do diary next year!).

The swedes are tiny, about a thumbs width, and the caulis are leafy but nothing else.

Can I leave them to pick up in the Spring, assuming the slugs stay off them, or would it be better to get them out now and start again next year?

Thanks!

Yes Surbie I would have thought they would be fine provided you protect against slugs as you suggest.

If the Swedes haven't fattened up yet then they won't get any bigger. They'll just run to seed in the spring >:(

With the cauliflower, it will depend on how harsh the winter is. Although it's called All Year Round, it's not usually an overwintering variety of cauli -  Suttons say to put in a cold frame to overwinter

Mum's right, the swedes aint going to do much now. Mine were late going in because everything else was late but some have reached about grapefruit size so quite useable. This year for the first time I sowed mine in modules and then planted them out when I had space. At least with that method they have have a decent start even if they are late going in the ground.

thanks for all the replies - roasted baby swedes this weekend then!
I'll see what leaving the caulis in does, but at least this way I get a bed back for digging over & prepping.
