I hate our throwaway society, so was considering collecting the see-through plastic cups from the water cooler at work to use for rasing seeds.  Has anyone tried this, and does the transparancy, help, hinder, or have no effect on the roots?

Should work just fine.  I use soft drinks bottles and they are clear.  The roots will avoid the light so technically will become potbound earlier.

Keeping the pots in an opaque tray / box of some kind will negate this.

A neighbour works as a gardener at some local major national gardens obtained about 3,000 3" pots for me many years ago and as only a few have disintrgated, I keep re-using these every year, but all the plastic cups from the school discos, etc. that my wife helps out at go in our recycling rather than landfill.

Thet will be fine, just remember to chop a hole in the bottom
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I,ve sown leeks, cabbage, cauli,s and beans in plastic cups and they work great. Just remember to provide drain holes.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
