There is a particlar type of mustard called caliente which they believe may (it does only say may!) deter wire worm as well as eel worm, I linked to this article in another post the other day, but it is here anyway - as it does definitely mention wire worm. Certainly a nicer alternative to try than using chemicals.

Look under the section: benefits to potato and root crops

sorry - yes you're right; eel worm. Adults die off as they have nothing to live on and cysts harden so they don't hatch.

The eggs in the eelworm cysts are induced to hatch by the mustard but cannot develop and die.

I think we are both kind of right:

"After you lift potatoes. planting agricultural mustard may help to reduce eelworm by hardening their cysts and preventing them from emerging on time, confusing their breeding cycle. Be careful though if you have club root because mustard is a brassica and mustard green manure can further spread the disease."

quoted from: http://www.donsgarden.co.uk/pests/444

basically, they emerge late in the year and die over winter.

the reason ,,,he had wireworm in his potato,,,thanx ill tell him not to bother,,dig in some good manure may help it
Having inherited a plot a while back that was absolutely riddled with wireworm, I can say that the best way of getting rid of them is taking out everyone you see when you are digging, hoeing, raking etc.

I used to take a small plastic pot round with me, and then emptied it into the chooks' enclosure along the way before I went home

Have had the plot now 2 yrs and 3m and now rarely see a wireworm

Wire worms are the larvae of the click beetle, which lives in grassy areas.  The larvae take about 4 years to grow and mature into the adult beetles.

If your plot was overgrown with grass and weeds before you took it over the wire worms will be gone after 3-4 years of cultivation.  As Sunny says it will reduce the numbers greatly if you remove any that you find.
