Have ordered some weld mesh to make a moderate sized run and found some bricks to raise the level. Is 8 inch square ok for POL chickens???

My neighbour's are all happy and I have telephoned the planning department as my deeds say no livestock.

Just to all other beginners out there who have not bought because of this reason Livestock DOES NOT include POULTRY. The Animal Welfare Officer also said that as long that they smell attract rats, or make too much noise the Council is more than happy for those living on estates to have chooks in their gardens.

Roll on the end of April when my coop arrives!! :)

Must raise up the perches as other wise they will mess up the nesting boxes and then you will have very dirty eggs when they start laying. I have fairly high nesting boxes but a higher piece of silver birch that they all sleep on together at night huddled up. Hey presto nice clean nest boxes and just clean up the mess under the perch each morning which only takes about five minutes. I just put down newspaper under the perch and then its very easy to keep clean.

Need to make it easy to look after them or it will get tedious! Enjoy 8) :)

me again - do you mean 8mm?
or do you mean like the stuff they have round farms?
or do you mean that the pieces of weldmesh are 8inches each side?

if it's the middle one, then that won't work if it's for th outside of the run, because although it might keep the chicken in, it won't keep the fox out!
(it can bite round any wire if it can get its teeth round it).
we recommend at least 19 gauge of 1cm weldmesh.

Just been given 8 8x4 sheets of 4mm weld mesh that a local builder was going to throw out. It's the stuff they use to hold rocks in at the side of roads. Looks galvanised and in good condition. Only 2 inch squares so no escaping chickens!!!

I would love to give them the free run of my garden but I get the impression that there would be nothing edible left for me!!! Apart from the chooks that is!!!

What breed should I be looking at, I love big eggs!!! Not so keen on bantam. There is a breeder near to me who sells cross breeds for disease resistance and better egg laying.

I am a newcomer to this too - started out last August. I have 3 Black Star hybrids, virtually daily medium to large brown eggs; 3 White Star hybrids, virtually daily large white eggs; 2 cream legbars medium pale blue eggs every other day (in season only, the hybrids produce all year though not every day in winter).

The hybrids in particular are all friendly curious birds.
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

2" square they will probably stick their heads out for the fox to bite off! you need weldmesh wire 1/2"x1" so the fox can't get his muzzle in to lever the wire apart. It's not that expensive and will save you a lot of heartache and expense. Nic
