Wasps
« on: August 23, 2011, 16:19 »
Hi everyone,

Nights are pulling in, autumn is coming and my pear tree is dropping pears like there is no tomorrow.  :(

This is attracting a lot of wasps.  If the girls eat one will it harm them? :(

I don't know what I can do to get rid of them but I don't like the idea of the girls being stung in their mouth.  They jump to catch flies

Any advice and re-assurance always welcome.

Thanks, KC x

If you watch hens closely they do not show any interest in wasps, in fact they appear to 'not see' them. This may be because they get stung once or twice .
I have seen a wasp and a hen chasing the same fly ! :)

As far as the hens are concerned wasps are not a problem.

Thanks to you both

I thought they would be OK but feel better now.

Hopefully they will stay away from them. :tongue2:

We have dead wasps and bumble bees all over our garden as my girls kill them then leave them. I actually only saw them do it for the first time the other day, previously all we had were the dead bees round the garden. About three of the girls all had ago until the wasp was dead and then they just left it. They were shaking their heads when they were doing it, not sure if that was the killing instinct or to prevent them getting stung, so i wouldnt worry about them.
Not sure how they would cope if the wasps managed to settle in the feathers and get to the skin to sting them.
