Whoo hoo candled eggs
« on: March 19, 2011, 22:36 »
Hi
I candled my 6 eggs again tonight (day 10) and I think one is alive!  :D
I candled them on day 6 and seen nothing in any of them and I was very disappointed  :(
The one I think is fertile is a Nankin banty, one is a welsummer so I can't see it.
The others are white shelled too but I think they are empty. I will check in a few days again just in case. I don't want to discard them in case I am wrong as I have never done this before.
They are under my little broody hen.  :)
1 Hubby, 2 children, 2 Welsummers, 1 Leghorn Banty, 1 Wyandotte Banty, 1 Barnevelder, 2 Isa Brown, 1 Rhode Island, 1 Goldline,1 Maran, 2 Mottled Leghorns, 1 Leghorn cockerel & 2 Jack Russells

I never candle eggs whilst under broodies - usually the broody can tell if they are duds or not and if they are they kick them out.
Staffies are softer than you think.

She is sitting tight on all off them
So do you think it is alright to leave them under her even if the are duds, they wont explode?

yes, and if at the end when some hatch she will wait a couple of days then abandon any duds that she hasn't already kicked out - or so I have always found with my broodies  :).

Can I ask another question about my little broody
I have got her eating wheat and some grass when I put her out, not a lot but I think enough but I haven't seen her drinking anything for a couple of days. I did give her some cucumber and she ate the inside so I suppose that give her a little water, Any ideas of how to get her to drink or will she drink when she is good and ready.
