Eglu
« on: March 18, 2011, 20:57 »
Hi
I've got an eglu but something is puzzling me. I'm reading posts about chicks roosting off the ground and also that the hen house has to be raised off the ground but the eglu has neither of these attributes. I'm confused. Can anyone help. Also one of the hens is sleeping in the nest box section (they haven't started laying yet) i know this as there's poo in their in the morning-do I have to go down a few times in the night and move her?

the reason for coops to be off the ground is
a) to give extra space in a run,
b) to prevent the bottom of the wooden coops from rotting (this won't happen with an eglu) and
c) to help prevent rats from gnawing through (again highly unlikely with an eglu).

I have an eglu with a trio of Belgians in and they sleep on the bars so in order to stop yours you will have to either put something in the nest box overnight or move them whilst they are sleepy.
Staffies are softer than you think.
