Pullet sitting on fake egg.... PLEASE HELP!!
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:06 »
Hi everyone,

This are my first chickens so unsure what is normal, but I have 6 red sexlink pullets that are ready to lay. But I am funding one of my pullets are sitting on the fake egg I put in there to teach where to lay. Now is this normal for a pullet to do that, that has never laid an egg?? Is she broody behaviour or is it that she is getting to lay her first egg??

Probably the latter.  She won't go broody just yet.

Thank you Snow White, I was hoping that was the case. Hopefully the egg soon then as she has been squatting for about 12 days now.

Is she constantly on the nest or just time to time?

I would say time to time, It only started tonight( I'm in Australia)after 5pm (thats when i noticed it)when she stood up the egg moved and she gently moved it back under her....so cute!! But I  Never read anything about them doing this before laying their first egg just about it with broody hens where they may start to show first signs in the evening ... Hence my confusion.  If it is related to egg laying how close is she to laying?? I am running out and can't decide weather to buy more or not.

It would be unusual for her to be broody but not impossible.  I have a bantam that went broody at 20 weeks old, she had been laying for a few weeks though.  You should be able to tell if she just prefers sleeping in the nest box or if she is broody though as she will squawk at you and puff herself up if you put your hand in the nest box.  If she is just sleeping in there it is best to block it off on a night and try to encourage her to perch.  Just lift her up on the perch once she is settled and drowsy, do this for a few nights and she should get the hang of it.   ;)
