Free wood chippings?
« on: January 08, 2012, 14:24 »
Has anyone got any suggestions of where to get free wood chippings from?  I need about a ton to use as paths to go inbetween my raised beds that I'm in the process of constructing.

               Cheers.

Have you a local sawmill or tree surgeon you could contact? :)

I've emailed some local tree surgens but no replies as yet.  Gutted cause a few months ago there was huge piles of the stuff near a local school that was being demolished so we got a sprinter van full one day for the inside of my polytunnel then we went back the day after for more and it was all gone!  It was the really good quality stuff aswell.

As long as it's NOT willow!

Every 'chip' will sprout.

That's the warning I was given years ago, just after I left school and was doing a training scheme with the council.

hmmm, I've worked with willow quite a bit (trellises, sculptures and stuff)  and can testify to its regenerative capabilities... but in years of work with woodchip (and there must have been a fair bit of willow in it sometimes) I've never found it sprouting. Anyone else? It would only sprout from bark-on chips, and maybe the heat from the heaps usually kills it?

Would they sprout straight away if they were 'fresh'? Maybe that's what they were warning me about.

The council would be your best chance. Our allotment gets the wood chips delivered when ever we want them. Just a phone call or an email and within a week or two they're at the plot.  ;)

I called a local tree surgeon who was happy to drop me off a van load each time I wanted.

They are normally busy folk so best to call than email.
