sideshoot please note we do not condone shooting of any animal whether it is a rat or not. Very few people are good shots and may either hit something or somebody else or just injure the rat which would cause it to have a long lingering painful end - not nice at all.

You can buy eradibait which will only poison rats and not harm chickens, cats dogs etc, or buy snap traps that are instant. If you use traps please check them several times a day. If you do use rat poison then wear disposable gloves that have been kept in your mixed corn container - this way the poison won't smell of you but of tasty food. Obviously then dispose of the gloves and not put it back into the feed bin.

Staffies are softer than you think.

Sound advice there Joyful  :D

You also need to be aware that you might need to put down several lots of bait, day by day ---- there is usually more than one rat

Thanks again everyone.

As in all cities, I think I'm stuck with them to a certain extent, even here in leafy Kings Heath!

Yeah, thanks for the non shooting reminder Joy.  Some people may think its the best way, but we do have a lot of members here who would get quite upset by this method on pest control.

They reckon that there is nowhere in this country where you are more than about 10 foot from a rat, we just don't always see them.

Like Joyfull, we get a lot of them here with the dykes and land drains all over the place, but I prefer the snap traps than poison because I always worry about the dog or chickens getting hold of anything.

I might be misunderstanding the psychology of Mr Rat but surely if there's no food source, they will move on  ?

but rats like chickens eggs and a pair of rats are quite capable of rolling an egg away, plus there is the chicken feed which even in a bin will still be giving off a scent that Mr Rat will find very appealing  :(
