I have a pair of dark glasses and to the outer edges I've glued two small dental mirrors (sans handle).  I'll call it the seeback-o-scope!  Do I use them for defence or attack? ? ? >:(

Cheers,  Tony.

Tony, many years ago, there was a firm called Ellisdons, and they actually sold 'Seebackroscopes'! They were small plastic mirrors, which you popped into your eye like a monocle, so you could see behind you!

They sold a myriad of 'toys', like fake money, plastic submarines you filled with baking powder etc, and all us kids bought loads of their stuff!

Happy days!

Oh wow! As a tot I used to have a plastic submarine in my bath and mum used to put baking powder in it to make it sink or was it to sink then rise again?  :)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Oh, I remember the submarines.  That's brought back a few happy memories.  It was about the time that we all shared the same bathwater because it had to be heated in the gas copper before anyone could have a bath and we weren't allowed to have any more than came up to our ankles.  Even this was a luxury because before that we used to have baths in the tin bath in front of the open fire.

Electric scooters were a plague in Atlanta, Georgia about 3 or 4 years ago. People would use them (rented scooters), then just dump them in the middle of the sidewalk. I felt particularly bad for sight-impaired or mobility impaired pedestrians. If you are navigating sidewalk in a wheelchair, or with a seeing-eye dog and cane, what do you do when you come across a pile of scooters?

Even before COVID, we started to see fewer scooters, I think because of city regulations, but also because I suspect many of those rented scooters were being tossed into skips, or ponds,  by pedestrians that had "had enough". You hardly see them anymore.

… hardly see them anymore.

That’s interesting.  The opposite of what I would have expected.

Answering the other part of your question, regulation, this applies mostly to rental scooters, some applies to all:
  • License and minimum age required to operate
  • Laws specifying where scooters can operate, speed limit, where they can be parked
  • Law and infrastructure allowing parking officials to impound scooters left in anything other than designated parking. Fine paid by whoever last rented it. Owner pays fee to get scooter out of impound

Strict enforcement of the above.

I actually saw my first one in Tunbridge Wells a couple of days ago.

The chap was well helmetted etc, riding on the footpath, but in Duke of York's Road, you don't get anywhere near the traffic, as it's so narrow, and I noticed he treated walkers with courtesy and space. Also, if he was going to work (downhill), I don't blame him for wanting a bit of help to get back up there at the end of the day!

I'd like to think more are like him, but fear they are'nt...

When I was driving back from work on Friday (late and well after dark) a whole swarm of them came out of a side road into the road in front of me.

There must have been a dozen kids on motorised scooters, with another 3 or 4 on normal ones hanging on for a lift to the powered ones.  No lights, no safety gear and wearing the ubiquitous black hoodies of popular yoof fashion.

They were lucky a few of them did not end up as hood ornaments  ::)

Anyway I stopped in time and although a couple of them may have needed a change of underwear, we all survived.

Lucky you, News! Well done for stopping in time!

I suppose electric scootering will become an Olympic sport soon - as will banging on the brakes in smart fashion! Medals will be awarded for 'language' as well...

Ha ha ha!

It's so nice that anyone can lip-read 'Anglo-Saxon' language!

Weren't you looking at an electric bike a while back Goosey?

My first ride in ages happened today, and we have one of the steepest hills in Kent on my route. I got to within a yard of the top, and the battery conked out for a second, which made me look an even more silly twit than I normally do!

They are a boon though, and easier to spot than little scooters, especially with the sort of puffing/wheezing noise that certain Growsters say when they eventually get going after a month or so...

One of the funnier things which happened earlier, was at Tesco, when I bumped into the lovely girl who cut my hair yesterday! She was conviced that as I was wearing a bike helmet and pushing a supermarket trolley along (back to the shop), that I really was getting a bit past it..:0~

If I was a few years younger...;0)
