Pay?  for pallets?  never!  You can pick them up free from all sorts of places like those block paving companies and most other industrial places that ahve bulk orders of stuff.  Most pallets are just thrown out onto landfill.

Don't they get re-used though? Some of them must do (by the companies, I mean)

We`re using ours for kindling and will then check onfreecycle for more,there are always lots onoffer.

It's not economical for most companies to re-use their pallets.  The only ones you mustn't use are the blue ones, but I can't remember why!

There are single-trip and multi-trip pallets.  Very light (cheap), single-trip, pallets are not expected to survive any longer than one shipment from A to B.

Heavy multi-trip pallets are much more expensive to make & are operated by 'pallet pool' companies such as CHEP (blue ones) and others.  These companies can demand you give them their pallets back if they see them in your yard or warehouse - even if you have to empty them.  They can also impose usage fees if you have them without an agreement with that pallet pool.
