Garlic and Onion Sets

I've been holding off because it's been damn cold up here in East Yorks!!

When is the latest I can put in Garlic, shallots and Onion Sets?

They're all pretty hardy, especially the garlic. I'd get that in now so long as the ground isn't actually frozen or waterlogged. The only reason my onion sets aren't in is cos I'm still preparing the beds. They're in modules in an unheated greenhouse and the roots are growing well.

I would get them in now, mine are and they have all srouted dispite it being cold.

Sets in modules, shallots in pots in greenhouse is fine, better than planting straight out IMO as you only plant out the ones that sprout and you don't seem to get the birds pull them up.

On the flip side after a couple of trial years I won't be sowing garlic in the spring, the bulbs are notably smaller. Garlic likes a lengthy cold spell to split the bulbs to cloves. Not to say it doesn't work, just that autumn sown is always better.

my garlic went in in november - its about 4" high at the moment and doing well.
onion sets have been going in over the past few weeks, still have a few to get planted yet.

On the down side you will be useing more compost than you need too.
