Our new family members!
« on: March 30, 2009, 13:53 »
Helloe everyone,

We've just got our first ever chickens - 2 pekin bantams and one Wyondotte Bantam cross. Despite planning for it the last 6 months, suddenly feel very unprepared (one has already spent about half an hour flying around the neighbourhood - I'll be after wing clipping advice soon)!!

So many questions still, but most importantly...they spent yesterday in the coop, and I thought I'd let them out into the run today. So I've opened their coop door and put up the ramp. But they remain resolutely in their coop.

Should I leave them to it or help them along? I don't want to bother them, so wasn't sure what was best. I've moved their food outside to try and tempt them.

Any advice?

Thanks everyone.

Mark

:)We left ours to it it, took them a few days to settle in and get use to a new routine and surroundings. We could tell when they were settled because they started pootling round making happy little noises ah bless! Kim

I'd agree with that- they'll take a little while to settle and get the hang of their new surroundings. Congratulations btw- and pictures of the girls are...where?  :)

Thank you. I will sit tight and leave them to it then. I have given them a brocolli stalk to keep jolly them along a bit. They look a bit worried sitting up on their perch!

Here's a couple of pics - not sure how the links work?

Thanks again,

Mark

Ah cute.  Do I take it that you have a cockerel and two hens?
Welcome to chook keeping.  Great fun once you're in the swing of it.
Mine have been "helping"  me dig the veg patch today.   :)

No, three hens - 2 unnamed (although one may be Bubbles), 1 called Lester at my 4 year old daughters insistence after a cockerel from 'Big Fun Farm' (or something) on C Beebies!

2 are white pekins, 1 is a Wyandotte Bantam Cross. All about to lay - hopefully  ;)

As predicted they have now ventured out and pecked around their run for an hour or so! Even exchanged some colourful language with next door's cat through the fence - that could be an interesting relationship!

Thanks for everyone's advice.

Mark
