onion sets when to plant??
« on: February 06, 2008, 17:57 »
hi again
Ive recieved my sets but they dont seem to have any planting instructions with them
i have
Shallots (golden gourmet) x2  500grms
Stuttgarter  500grms
Red Karmen  250grms

but what do i do next??  i know they got to be planted but when is the question..is there anything i need to do with them 1st.
i did have ago with some onions last yr but didnt have much joy with only a few small bulbs to show for my efforts but it could be that they were constantly in the shade as i planted them right next to the runner beans.
thanks in advance for any advice.

Onions and any beans do not grow well together.

If your ground is not waterlogged, any time nowish and early spring.

You don't need to do much to them but take out of package.

Could do with a bit of muck in their place though.

They are OK as they are somewhere cool, shed garage. Not much sun until planted.

I usually take my onion sets out of the bag and just throw them on the ground for a week or two, they will then start to grow roots and you can put them in the ground carefully trying not to damage the roots.

Mine haven't arrived yet, but it's still pretty wet here,so happy enough to wait a while for them.

Planning on putting mine directly in the garden under cloches this weekend (weather permitting). Cloches act in my case as a barrier against cats & birds as well as keeping the worst of the weather off. Cloches stay on until shoots are about 2" high, unless weather appalling.

Personally i would not plant any of them until March,i too live in South Wales and the ground is far too wet for planting anything. My advice would be to remove them from their bags and spread them out in seed trays. You will need to check them for any disease,if one is bad it will soon spread to the rest if left unchecked.

I won't be planting anything till mid-march and then will be under fleece... had 2-3 inches of snow on 12th April a few years ago up here :)

As onions are biennials, no cold should really bother them, IMO, besides there is nowt cold in most of this country.

There is the question of some bulbs and tubers rottening in badly drained ground but this is also debatable as far as onions are concerned.

There is this old gardening practice and advice to plant shallots and onions on the shortest day and harvest on the longest, which a chap on our site has been doing for decades now.

I don't do much sets nowadays, I tend to sow seeds both end of summer and  winter.

Autumn ones are sown outside, they are doing fine. :)
