we have lost 6 chickens this year
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:22 »
any advice would be great. i have checked the coop for red mite and no sign of them, chickens are clear as well. the chickens have full run of our garden, egg production has reduced but we don't know why. the chickens get a mixture of layers pellets, corn freely available to them and a cup full of maize a day. they have plenty of water. none of my chickens are over 4 years old, many were in their first year. any ideas what is happeneing or what we can do. thanks june

Hi

Did any of them seem ill before you lost them?
Do you have any poisonous plants growing?

I would look for anything that has changed, as if you have had chickens fora while with no issues and now are losing them i would suspect some thing has changed and is the cause- even if it seems unimportant- like have you neighbours starting keeping chickens and this has brought a disease in.

good luck!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

thanks mobilekat. the last one was off it before she died this morning  :( hadn't thought about plants so will have a look around, but i don't think so. we have a lot of cats in the neighbourhood who seem to use our garden as their toilet. wonder if they are getting anything from them. not sure about neighbours having chickens but it could be possible. thanks for the ideas

besides plants have they been wormed recently, also do you put rodent poison out?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hello and really sorry to hear your news.
More questions.....
Were there any symptoms before they died? (eg. respiratory, lethargy, weakness, paralysis, off food)
Over what period of time did the deaths occur? (days, weeks, months)
Had they been vaccinated- or had some been vaccinated and others not?
How old were they? (some illnesses are more likely in young birds, Marek's for example)
Had their eggs quality changed ?
Had they been wormed and with what?
Sorry for all the questions but it might help to find a cause.
