« on: March 18, 2012, 21:30 »
Hi, I have grown some pumpkin seeds and now there getting quite large, I have potted them on once, and seem to big for these pots already, should I plant them up? and will they remain upright and rigid, I had a couple fall sideways, think they just need bigger pots and planting up a bit more, help not sure  :)

To be honest, you've sown too early.

Mine won't be sown for a month or so. It sounds like they're flopping because they're too weak and leggy.

Whereabouts do you have them and do you have a photo?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If the roots are showing out of the bottom of the pot, or at least are pretty much filling the pot, then definitely put them in a bigger pot.

How big are the plants, and what size pot are they in at the moment?

I think pumpkins can sprawl a little.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They actually don't look too bad at the moment, but here's your problem:

Where are you going to put them for the next two months, probably more, before you can safely plant them out?

Yes they do need potting into larger pots, and next week, and the week after and................

If it's reasonably warm, they should be fine, even outside during the day. They could actually cook in the greenhouse unless it's well ventilated.

I won't be sowing mine until next month.

Would they be ok if I left the flap open on them? Maybe I will resow. They do take off quickly!!!!

Leave the flap open,  they should be OK, but I do warn you - they will be very large by the time you can safely put them out!

If you're going to be out all day, then the temp will likely have dropped considerably by 5pm, going by the past few weeks, i would keep the flap closed personally- i don't think its hot enough weather for the temp inside a mini greenhouse to get to damaging levels (going by my own which is in full sun most of the day)
You'll probably end up needing to re-sow to be honest...

You can shade the plants with newspaper layed over them, or propped up on sticks held on by clothes pegs.

They might well be in eight inch pots by the time the weather is OK for planting them out, and from experience, large plants wilt badly in the eind and sun of the plot until then can get their roots working again

Think ahead as to hwo you will protect them for the first week or two so they can get going. Can you creat some cloches that would cover them, made with netting?

The temperature here is not dropping until sundown - well past 6 p.m. and this week the minimum temp for the OP's area is forecast to be about 7C. I think a pumpkin would be happier in that, rather than being toasted in a greenhouse. I did look it up before I posted my original.

But I do agree about re-sowing, it's by far the easier option.
