I just wanted to say
« on: August 05, 2007, 18:19 »
I am learning so much since I joined this forum. Although I have years of experience in plants/shrubs/flowers, I am completely new to veg.

It really gives me confidence that I can manage my allotment although all my friends think I must be mad to take one on at 52, but they are just old before their time! Spent a sweltering three hours digging today and have nearly cleared two more beds. One for the onions/shallots/garlic I have ordered. The other I may cover with polythene and put poatoes in it early next year.

Spinach, pak choi, carrots and spring cabbage all growing.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Yes this forum has really helped me as well. Though my uncle and grandfather had allotments in the past, so I knew a bit about it, this is my own first one, and the learning curve is initially rather steep.
Many thanks to all on the forum, all the advice has been a great help.  8)

i am 72 and just taken on my first allotment but sharing it with my son. Hubby did a bit of digging but he isnt into gardening at all. Once when he went to the allotment after about 5 days and he saw the weeds again he said "oh i cant be doing with this"!!!

know how you feel hurting back my OH has come up with so many excuses - i did not know there were so many reasons why you can't pick up a watering can or a weed - still at least i get time to myself and the view from the lottie as the sun goes down is magic - and many many thanks to everyone - this site has helped me get going and not give up on the new plot :D

Good for you HB i admire you.My hubby helps but needs a bit of encouragement  We are gonna make raised beds with bark for paths and hopefully wont get so many weeds next year. We've made a barked area for the kids with some old plastic chairs and table.Gonna grow some flowers around next year to brighten things up.....

You must be on one of those young peoples' plots - I think you have to be at least retired to be on ours.

Good for you Lynne ...

... age is irrelevant on an allotment.  And it's been discussed on here before I know, but you are more likely to be the odd one out if you're under 30, rather than over 50!

On our site one of the plots I most admire belongs to a retired lady ... I'm too polite to ask how old she is.  She's won best allotment several times and it's a fabulous mixture of veg and flowers.  She's just a sweetheart and an inspiration.

i hardly see anyone from my plot - it's a very posh area - they must all work or something

i don't even walk through the site (well i can't walk very well anyways)

i am furthest away from the entrance - so just drive my car right to edge - great for the dogs - tools - cool bag   etc.

most of the plots are just left unattended - i think it's a real shame - that people don't look after them - but won't give them up either and let someone else have a go.

not that there is much demand around here - as far as i know they have never had a waiting list - until i came along and asked for a plot

the plotties that i have seen have been very old (and non-speaking - just nodding) men.
