« on: May 23, 2010, 06:08 »
Hi everyone i,ve recently got an allotment and have planted lots off veg in it.im looking forward to picking my own veg this year rather than buying it from the supermarkets.
However i,ve noticed lots of tiny holes in the leaves of my brasica plants and after a quick look on the internett it looks like flea beetle are causing the damage . does any one have
a way of getting rid of them before they destroy the lot.please help

They like hot dry conditions. Keep the earth damp. If they are well watered and growing fast  the plants should grow away from the damage anyway.

I just wanted to add to the thread for a more natural way of getting ride of flea beetle, as i was recently made acquaintance with the pesky *  :tongue2:

I read online that a less harsher and more natural way of getting rid of them was to get:
6 cloves of garlic,
a whole onion
some really hot chilly powder.

Slap them all into the blender and then empty out into in a half gallon of water and stir once or twice as your passing. Leave it there for at least 24 hours for all the ingredients to leech into the water.

(some people suggested to add some oil so that it help 'stick' to the leaves. I didn't bother and still got great results)

Then add the concoction to a sprayer and spray the top leaves! Sorted. The stuff will be rather potient, so try wearing gloves and try not to slip any on yourself.  :D

I also found that if you spray it in area prone to damage by foxes, cats or the like, this usually acts as a deterrent too!!

One more thing to add, try to do this when the weather is less temperamental as the rain would most likely wash it all away. If so then reapply.

I hope this helps.

To Seed Or Not To Seed. That is an easy question.
