Funny-looking new potato
« on: May 29, 2023, 12:36 »
All my new potatoes (several rows) are doing fine except the odd-looking one I spotted yesterday (see pictures - it is the plant in the middle of the three). Any idea what is the cause please? Any advice? Should I dig it up and destroy it?

That looks like blight. I'd destroy it

Thanks for your reply. So early! And there's been no rain for weeks. If they all catch blight now there is now way of saving the plants, because they haven't even flowered yet!

Well, I just dug up the plant and it looks as though the root has been chewed (see pictures). There were also some very tiny potatoes.

Thanks. It does rather. I suppose that's better than blight!

Yes I can’t see how it would be blight in such dry conditions and so early in the year.

Agree with Aunty - the blackened base of the stems is very typical of blackleg.
A few of my plants succumbed to it about 5 years ago - I quickly removed them and it didn't affect the rest of the crop, and, touch wood, hasn't recurred since despite having limited scope for long term crop rotation in my garden.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks. Actually, the blackened part was under the soil, not visible from the surface and the root seems to have been chewed. I have just left a hole where I removed the plant. Should I cover this up?

Perhaps a good idea to cover the hole with some soil from another part of the garden - disinfect any tools you use (diluted bleach or Jeyes would do the trick.)
