No seedlings at all
« on: May 22, 2014, 12:43 »
Hi

We built a new raised bed last year and filled it with both stabled and field horse manure. At the start of April I sowed Winter Savory, Salad Burnet, Welsh Onion, Good King Henry and Perennial Rocket but absolutely nothing has come through. It's been 6 or 7 weeks now and no sign of seedlings at all.

Why is this, do you know? Was I too early sowing? Was it the frost? Could there have been urine in the straw? Would love to know why this happened, thanks in advance :-)

HIya

I'm not quite sure from your post - but if you sowed the seeds directly into manure that may have been a bit rich for them.  You could try buying a bag of bog standard compost - using that to fill the drills and sowing the seed into the compost to give them a head start before the roots hit the manure.   It's probably not too late to try again.  (Having said that I've double sowed in the past as I was sure things had died and weren't going to come up - and they did - which led to a crowded bed...).

I put two bags of compost on top and watered it in. There was straw in the mix, wondered if that could be a problem or not...?

Drills of compost sound like a plan, thanks :-)

In that case - maybe you were just a bit early.  I'm not sure that the straw would have been a problem if it was under 2 bags of compost.  Try again....

Have you been out at night to check if there are lots of slugs. Maybe they are all just getting eaten? I go out with a head torch and flick all the slugs I can find into a container and relocate them away from my garden/allotment :D

Was the manure well rotted? Or fresh? & when did you add it to the bed? Did you dig it in or just put it on top?

I woudl suspect slugs too.  There were things I sowed up the allotment that almost totally failed, and I know they were germinating, they just kept disappearing again.  Too small for the rabbits to bother with.

There's lots of slugs up the allotment, we destroyed 40 last time we were up.

It was a new raised bed we built last year, it was fairly fresh (a few months old) horse manure and we just covered it with two bags of compost and didn't use it till this year.

I think slugs have waited for germination & chomped the lot off. :(
