Chickpeas - I've read the leaves secrete something that can burn your skin but they can be grown successfully in the south, anyone tried?

Soya Beans, Mr F sells Elane is it worth a try?

Tomatilos, these sound like a win win heavy croppers and can be kept outside, anyone tried?

Cucmelons, anyone tried should I just stick with cucumbers?

Many Thanks

I've grown soya beans and tomatillos.

Soya beans are fairly productive but they need a decent season.  They absorb all the nutrients from the leaves as the beans form so you end up with a bean twig covered in pods.  Eaten fresh they are quite nice.  Mine ran out of time to dry on the plants before autumn set in.

Tomatillos are very prolific in a greenhouse.  Not tried them outside.  I just wasn't keen on the taste so didn't grow them again.  They are a bit green tomato in flavour with a bit of citrus zing.

Hope that helps a bit  :)

As NS - they're grow really well, I also think they make a really pretty plant / flower. I've grown them outside, the fruit were slightly late and smaller but other than that no real issue.

Make sure you have a use for them though - there's only so much salsa you can eat.

I've grown tomatillos. They grew really easily and cropped well on my back garden clay. Nice taste too, tangy. Nice in stir fries and curries.

A lot of people on our site grow chick peas sucessfully. I think they just grow from the bags you get in the corner shop.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
