Wine kits
« on: June 22, 2007, 18:44 »
Hi everybody i bought some wine kits last year and never got around to using them and a couple of them have exceeded their best before date my question is should i throw them or risk brewing them? If i do risk it will the effect be on me    or the wine? What effect would it be?

Sorry for all the questions.

Kind regards Nicky

Use them, I'm sure they'll be just fine.

The best before date is for the yeast, not the concentrate, so to be safe you could:

1) make a starter by adding the yeast to some likewarm water with a pinch of sugar in container covered with clingfilm and check it's fizzing before you quickly open your can of concentrate and add the sugar.

or

2) buy some fresh wine yeast.

The concentrate should last years and the only problem you might get is some sugar cristals at the bottom, but some hot water should dissolve them.

I buy loads of 'out of date' grape concentrate kits when I find them at half price  and sometimes it's another 12+ months before I use them all up.

I made an out of date wine up at Christmas, and the only thing wrong was it took longer to clear, otherwise, it was okay!!

Should be fine provided they are not over  12 months out of date even then worth opening and having a look If they look and smell Ok got for it . More risky with beer kits 12 month max

Have fun
