When best to sow parsnips.
« on: April 10, 2012, 14:34 »
Hi, I have two pkts of parsnip seeds.  One states sow feb the other March. As its been so cold and miserable here I have not sown. Is it too late to direct sow or too early?

Not done mine yet.

Sowed them in May last year and still had a good crop.

March is fine if you're down south.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You are in the milder south west, though!

I've got one rocketing away in the patch I grew them in last year. I've not set any this year in this patch so it must be an hangover or self set from last year.

It will no doubt be one you missed that's now going to seed.

My Neighbour gave me four that had been left in over the winter on his allotment. I have to be honest I had never seen one so big before. It made me realise some rubbish we buy in the shops.  :)

I think the commercially grown are governed more by the sizes the sorting machinery can cope with.   One superb specimin could put the sorting machine out of action for hours untill the biggie is cleared.       Cheers,     Tony.

Thats so sad, I scrubbed them and roasted them that night. They tasted gritty, obviously I did not scrub them enough. So the shop ones have some advantage  :)

At this time of year they could be going a bit woody. They're not going to hang on for much longer.

Looks like a new plant to me DD. Could a seed have laid dormant for that long?

Old parsnips will now be putting on nice new green growth, using the store of food in the root.  I don't  think a seed will be "rocketing away".

Have you had a look under the soil? I have found a few from last year putting on good growth - the ones i had missed when harvesting.
