ok to compost?
« on: June 27, 2009, 21:19 »
Are the potato plants ok to be put in the compost? (As long as all remnant of spuds have been removed that is)

And is it pretty much grass in the compost but weeds are to be burnt?

annual weeds can go in the compost as long as not seeding. Perenial weeds are best burnt or put in your rubbish bin :)

Perennial weeds can also be drowned for a couple of weeks, then put onto the heap  :)

Grass can go in, but if you've got lots, mix it in with other stuff. I found that if I put lots of grass in the compost bin, it turns into a solidly sludgy block. Now I mix it in with straw and chicken poo when I clean the henhouse out - if you don't have straw and chickens, shredded newspaper or cardboard is supposed to be good but I've not done that

Hope this helps!

The tops of perennial weed are good to compost if not seeding but not the roots. If it is hot i lat the roots out until they dessicate then compost. You need to layer grass into your general heap and after a few weeks mix it in.it does initially really heat up but too much in one go and it becomes slimey and difficult to break up.

One word of caution about hot heaps

I had to put out a smouldering compost heap on our site today - could have been another example of the toerags who are busy causing mayhem on the site, but actually i suspect spontaneous combustion.  In these dry days, be aware that heaps can get really really hot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

sorry, forgot to answer origional question.Potato hallums are fine to compost just be carefull if you have blight, having said that my heaps are a bit slow and the blighty compost from last year is not causing this years tatties any probs. If you start worrying about your own healthy hallums then you will worry about the peeling/scraps left from any veg that you do not grow.

Yes they do, it's sometimes difficult to balance between a pile of slime and a smoking menace.
Mine was steaming in the middle last winter but seems to have settled a bit now.
