So every other day I rake up leaves and put them on the compost heap (trying to give the grass a fighting chance of surviving winter). This morning however I let the girls out of their run before doing that and it seemed last night the neighbour's tree had shed more than usual - it was about half an inch think outside their run.
I've never seen the girls so happy! I really didn't have the heart to tidy up they were just running around so happy. It seems like I'm going to have to make a trip to the park to get some more leaves for them to play in, it's amazing how the simple things in life entertain us all.

Yes they are wonderful aren't they. They are sorting through it looking for lots of insects and worms, and hopefully those damaging little snails

In summer give them a whole sweetcorn cob to play with. Stand back and watch.  Hours of entertainment

They do indeed love the leaves. Our's have their original run beneath the walnut and pear tree, and this is the best place for all 18, even though they have masses of other space. The walnuts are particularly prized if you crush a few, gives them exercise chasing after each other!

I've been putting the collected leaves in the girls outer run and chucking a handful of mixed corn in.

my chickens don't play - they rush out of their run and eat the leaves instead ... I could understand it if I was depriving them of greens    And it wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't read up that cherry tree leaves are poisonous (probably plum, apple and pear knowing my luck) so it's a game of who can snatch the leaf out of the beak fast enough.

I have 2 conker trees at the bottom of my garden and i do the same as Grinling they love it.

Its just as well they are sweet  - last weekend I spent hours raking all the leaves into piles then watched the chickens run from pile to pile kicking them all over in a fit of ecstasy.  (Almost) worth my effort.
