Potatoes
« on: June 10, 2010, 23:07 »
I currently have both first early and main crop potatoes growing on my allotment. The early ones are coming into flower, however, for some strange reason the main crop ones are also coming in to flower.

Any ideas on what effect this will have on the potatoes and can I do anything about it - i.e. take the flowers off?

I have first earlys and main crop main crop are in flower and earlys are not. there is next to nothing on the main crop and not much more on the earlys so what does that tell you ? .i cant see how removing flowers would help but perhaps someone knows better

Leave the flowers on, no need to remove them  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The sight of a plot or field of potatoes in full flower is a bonus. Enjoy!

I am in the other school: I have always taken them off. What do you want them for? In addition, the fruits are poisonous. Potatoes are in the same family as deadly nightshade!

Pointless extra work.

And you should know better than to eat the fruit.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's no big deal. I walk down the rows checking the plants as you do. It also takes away a child's curiosity.(I am right next to a playing field)  What makes you think that I eat them?  :nowink:

Leave them to flower. You can use the fruit as ammo in your catapult. That's what we used to do 50 years ago  :)

My maincrop are still fairly small and are nowhere near flowering. They are Sarpo Mira and I know from last year that they are slow starters (I was concerned at this last year). They more than make up for this later, and last year the haulms seemed excessively large (plenty of compost material though).

Sarpo Mira do produce very large haulms.

They are very good for weed control!
