Which are the best pure breeds?
« on: August 10, 2009, 17:50 »
For eggs, I should add.

Looking to add to my flock, but don't want to get hybrids. I have 3 lovelies, who haven't
laid reliably for over 6 months now.

What I would like is a nice pure breed that will lay less eggs per year, but over a longer period. I'm not looking for table birds, and they shall have happy, spoilt lives even when they have finished laying...

Your suggestions will be hugely welcomed.
Thanks
Lukasmum

Thanks Joyfull - thats brilliant!!!

How long do pure breeds lay for?, I appreciate numbers will drop off as the bird ages.
Thanks!

White Leghorns, they lay a lot more than 200 a year as it it says in that list, I have loads of breeds and the white leghorns are the best and most reliable layers even through the winter.

I think Favorelles are the best breed ever - they are quiet, good looking, cuddly, good layers  good broodies and if you want to - the cockerels that aren't needed are very quick to  fatten up to be eaten :) :)

You should get banty ones then - exactly the same as LF - but in a smaller version :) :)

Cochin - would bantums be bullied by my hybrids, just from pure size?

I have plans to house new birds in a secure run within the chicken 'compound'
so they can get used to each other a while, before I let them mingle.
I would be worried smaller birds would be fair game, so to speak!
have you had  any experience?
Thanks

personally I wouldn't its not so much their size but faverolles by nature are incredibly sweet and docile, the bantams especially so.
