Bait Hives
« on: April 29, 2012, 22:10 »
Does anyone have any experience with bait hives.

Have finally got around to starting making a couple of hives (Warre) and intend to make temporary tops and bottoms for some of the boxes so that I can put them in suitable locations at home/work to catch a swarm. Seems like the thing to do is scent them with essential oil of lemon grass and hope...

Anyone have any tips/experience/success?

Never done this before but I have set a bait hive this year with old comb in it as this is also very attractive to bees.

Will have to wait and see what happens although plan A is actually to prevent mine from swarming as don't want to expand numbers while likely to move house soon. As I'm away a lot at the moment though it might be worth it just in case I miss one (and of course they are obliging enough to move in! :tongue2:)
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
