Carrots in boxes
« on: October 19, 2011, 20:48 »
Have neve had much luck with carrots on my allotment site ( 4 years) but this year grew them in raised beds approx 16" high filled to about 10" with soil  covered  with net frame (made from onion sack)

Great carrots no carrot fly, still picking.!

After trying to grow carrots (and giving up growing them) for more years than I care to remember, I do believe this is the only way to get a decent crop.

Cover Cover Cover them to keep the beasties out

Never had a problem with the dreaded fly.

I always had problems with severely forked carrots to the point of being unusable.

I now grow them in old flower buckets and succesionally sow every 2 to 3 weeks.
I have great carrots now, although not the biggest they are certainly very sweet.

We never have an issue in the school garden. I think  this is beacuse there are no more carrots for at least a couple of miles

But of course down at the plot there are thousands to attract with the smell of succulent carrot leaves: resident population  :tongue2:

Yes, I grow in my garden and have never had fly problems either. It's just the mice :) Every time they scoff every last one of them, no matter how many traps I set. I've tried some in buckets this year but they're very small and quite a few are misshapen. Next year I'll try them in a raised bed in my polytunnel, so here's hoping that will finally work.

Try standing the bucket on a half brick. The mice find it hard to negotiate and might give up

As the weeds were doing better than my 2nd to last batch of outdoor carrots, I gently weeded their bed, trying not to disturb the carrots. When I pulled them, they were long and muddy looking. Then I washed them. It wasn't mud

I'd weeded previous beds with no problem either!

Hope the one's germinating in tubs in my g'house survive ok
