How good are grass clippings as a mulch?
« on: July 07, 2007, 12:10 »
I have a new lawn at home, completely weed free, and its growing like crazy, I am cutting three times a week.

It is producing one dustbin bag of excellent clean grass clippings each cut.

How good are these as a mulch for the water hungry things, beans, courgettes, squashes, tomatoes etc?

I certainly need some help to keep the weeds down and hopefully before long the sun will come out and a mulch might help me cut dopwn on watering a bit.

Thanks all

Ian

Well I use our grass cuttings for all our new trees and bushes.

I just hadn't thought of using them for courgettes etc but I have for tomato bushes and wigwam beans.

Does anyone know any reason why not?

The Organice veg bed at the Inverewe Gardens in Scotland use the grass cutting to mulch their potatoes. I have tried this and over the past three years have found it to be very effective.

i have used grass clippings as a top layer in my little cucurbits hotbed - to help keep heat and moisture in.

grass can take a long time to rot down - but if you heap it up and let it break down (for a year or so)  it produces a lovely compost / mulch for you beds.

i also put a layer in the compost heap too - but not too much

Hi,
I know I read in a 'Bob Flowerdew' book he uses grass cuttings as a green mulch, I did this last year amongst my brassicas and it worked fine, by the end of the year you wouldn't have known it had been there.

I might be right in thinking that brassicas would like the nitrogen boost from the cuttings too.

Wayne.
Cheers,

Wayne.
