« on: September 20, 2009, 21:59 »
Hiya,
i have inherited a very old and over grown apple tree on my plot and was wondering if anyone could tell mesomewhere i can get info on pruning apple trees to help rejuvinate them. I only have a couple on this year and would like to give it a chance to prove its worth before getting rid.

thanks in advance.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

We have three trees in our garden (Bramley, Russet and Worcester Pearmain) and they were all in a pretty poor state when we moved in. Lots of growth but very little fruit. They'd been neglected for years and we decided to have a go at renovating them. Apple pruning should be done over winter and you should never take out too much growth in one season. Look at it as a two to three year project. We're in the second season of ours and are now getting good crops from all three trees. What you want to do is create a tree that has a good amount of space around the main branches and not too many 'watershoots', which are non fruit bearing upright shoots coming off a main branch. A neglected tree will probably have a lot of these.

We searched for advice on the internet and found this helpful chap on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_jqgWXlUHM.

What type of tree have you got?
