Title: Spring onions and seed viability
Post by: cawdor2001 on December 20, 2008, 12:00
I put in 2 lots of White Lisbon (Winter Hardy) seed from Suttons and not a single one came up, same with Japanese onion seeds too, i reckon the seed was not viable and there has been a bit about this in the news this year, ie non viable seed even from 'reputable' seed suppliers.

Questions;

anyone else had this experience from their seed supplier, which seed and supplier?

I love Spring onions, when is the earliest i can plant now (outside or greenhouse/cloche?) or would you wait until early Spring?

I had some greek cress to grow in greenhouse from the organic gardening catalogue. you think cress growing like mustard n cress...easy.
Wrong not a single one germinated. :shock:
Also had this several times with seed from T & M last year and at their prices it's not on. :evil:  So now won't buy from either of these.

Had good results from plants of distinction and seeds of italy so will continue with these and also trying some from alan romans....Although am on record as wishing planting instructions were on his pkts, still giving them a go as recommended by many on this site.

I planted a tray of Suttons White Lisborn Winter Hardy on 1st November. They took 3 weeks or so to show and then spent another couple of weeks as tinny little U shapes but they're just uncurling and are about 2" tall. Germinations very good I sowed them 1" apart in a grid and the tray's pretty full.

Planted mine in good time but directly into the plot, as i say none came.  Think i will plant some more in the greenhouse early next year and transplant out as clumps later.

thanks for the comments all
