Title: Why are my Onions Bolting??
Post by: gmbunn on June 12, 2010, 13:08
Hi folks,

I've got some red and some white onions in the ground for the first time this year and they seemed to be doing really really well. I've been away for a fortnight and when I returned I've found almost all of them have long flower stalks now! I read that this is called bolting, but what does it mean for the onions? Are they no good now and if so, why has this happened?!

Any help or advice would be great!

I hope it isn't a problem - I've had a few also and just been snipping off the flower head.

some of mine have bolted but to be honest I have never had 100% of the bulbs in the past not bolting by the time I harvest them! But the bolted ones get used first of all as they dont store well and the others that have not bolted do go into storage
