Flower advice for the shade
« on: August 26, 2011, 16:46 »
Hi,

I'm new to hear at took over an allotment last year.  This year has simply been a trail and error session.

Running along the side of my poly tunnel is a path with a small border separating the two, the only down side being is that this area is always shaded by the polytunnel.  I would like nest year to line this border with some flowers but don't know which would be best suited for an area that is shaded so much albeit light does come through due to the plastic covers of the tunnel.

Does anyone have any advice please that could assist me.

Thanks

Stu

Hello and welcome Stu!  :) Can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I'll have a think for you and I just know others will have ideas too.  :D

busy lizzies, fibrous rooted begonias, foxgloves(!), french marigolds....
......or if enough space how about a few clumps of hostas!

I like this site
http://www.findmeplants.co.uk/fullquestionnaire.aspx

cos you get to fill in some things that apply to your garden  :)
I'd say light for half the day, cos you will get some sunlight through the plastic :)

I'm thinking foxgloves, perennial geraniums, epimediums, ibrunneras, vies, ferns, heucheras - make your soil nice and rich and water-retentive too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If you don't want to put flowers, I always use the shady space alongside my polytunnel for parsley. They love the increased dampness because of the rain coming off the side of the tunnel and grow really well.
