Whose eating my beans
« on: April 25, 2011, 16:57 »
Ive lost 9 plants in the last week to something that seems to be living in my coldframe >:(  It doesnt appear to be an insect, there are no holes but one day newly emerging leaves are there and the next day they are gone.  The lid has been closed and nothing else (lettuce, coriander, squash's and broad beans) have been touched just my runners and dwarf climbers missing their top leaves and then obviously die pretty quickly.

Ive never really grown beans before so ive no idea what it would be

sounds like slugs to me :(
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

That's mice. They adore peas and beans. Sometimes they snip off the top and leave it lying there, but other times they snip it off and take it away. Last year the little gits took an entire tray of sweet pea seedlings in my greenhouse, but then one fell into my watering can and drowned and I never lost another seedling. This year I've had them in my cold frame, nipping the tops off red and white cabbage seedlings. I moved the cold frame a bit, because there was a bit of a gap at the bottom on one side, and had no more problems.
