As soon as I finish digging the bed - the earlies will go in  ;)

I'm aiming for the 17th as usual  :)

At the weekend I re-dug over last years potato patch and found a few missed potatoes.  None of them had sprouted indicating to me that it is still too cold to plant spuds.

I also found a few a couple of weeks ago when digging, they went down well with the roast chicken. Checked the spuds in the greenhouse and they are all happily chitting away, tempted to start putting them in, but I think I am suffering from sun stroke
who pinched me marrow?

Maybe its the area but the ones here we missed had rather large sprouts already.

Looking at the forecast, it looks like at least the great wetness is over, which was my main concern . Have dug over to speed up the drying process. Some rogues from last year have already sprouted, so my earlies and second earlies are going in tomorrow. Am on the South coast, so by the time I plant, earth up once, and have fleece for middle May emergencies, I should be fine.
Am more concerned about blight at the other end  than frost at the start.

I've probably jumped the gun a bit, but I put two rows of earlies in last week - the ground had been covered, so wasn't too wet. I'm going to the allotment tomorrow to put three rows of maincrop in, all being well. I've always planted early, and as long as you earth up well as they come through, it never seems to be a problem. The benefit is that they're usually out of the ground before blight strikes.

it is important that the soil has had time to warm up a little before planting , if you put your hand in the soil and it feels very cold then the potato wont like it either ;)
This is what I do, many of the old timers on our site plant on St Patricks day & harvest on American independance day. But I usually wait until the soil is less cold.

The nights have gone very cold here in North East Wales. I think it'll be another 3-4 weeks at least until I plant the first earlies.

We also had that 'lovely' late dumping of snow last year so perhaps i may hold them back even later

I reckon in the North-west on clay soil that St Patricks day is the first date I might think about it but most likely leave to the end of the month!
