Newie silly onion Question
« on: June 28, 2008, 21:59 »
I have planted my first ever onions (sets) a couple of months back.  Went up the lottie tonight and a few of them have yellow bud looking things on the stalks.  What are they?

Pick them, chop them, cut them, just remove them.

They have bolted, (run to seed early), probably not helped by the dry spells.

It will not neccesarily hapen to them all.

These onions will not store very well, so use them first.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The thing that looks like a little hat I'm on about, not sure if it's a flower we had them on some of the onions and garlic so ate them, nearly blew my head off!

You'd better thanks 'gobs' as well, she was first in there!

The onion itself will continue to grow, so there's no need to dig them up to use straight away, unless you have a use for them.

They won't store as the bit of the flower stem in the bulb itself will quickly rot once the onion is lifted.

Even worse, we're not allowed to eat "smelly" food at work, and I ate one of the garlic "hats" on the lottie before I went to work, must have made my breath stink, but I don't care!
