Blackcurrants
« on: September 06, 2008, 13:22 »
Hello

I have ten or so blackcurrant plants I plan to move to a permanent position on the allotment in Oct/Nov.  I want to put them in a shady position, as I've read blackcurrants can tolerate shade and I have lots of shade on my plot.  Will they grow ok in shade?  Also, any tips for planting blackcurrant plants?  I know they're hungry plants, so how far from other veg should they be?

Thanks
Freddie

Blackcurrants and shade
Be careful with currants inthe shade.  All fruit (I think) prefers sunlight.  However some, including currants, TOLERATE partial shade.  They won't fruit quite as well, and as the shade gets deeper they will fruit less.

So don't plant them somewhere dark....
Good luck
John
