Unless you want them to sit in the ground and rot - don't even think about it!

Mine are sown in April.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yep as DD says far too cold & wet at the moment. There was lots of discussion on here last year about sowing at different times & success rates. Some people germinate them in damp paper & plant when they see signs of life, I just chuck them in now around late March /April dependant on weather conditions

from Moles Seeds cultural guides

Quote
Parsnips germinate between 5 and 21 centigrade but a soil temperature of 10 – 21 degrees centigrade is preferred.

soil temperatures above 10oC is key to successful germination (this is not the same as air temperature) so if we have a cold spring, you might still have problems in April.  Seeds can take up to 3 weeks to germinate so why not try pre-chitting (seeds on damp tissue in a sandwich box somewhere warm)  Check daily, and at the very first signs of germination, gently sow them.  As the seed root develops so much more quickly than the top growth, you really can't delay once they start to germinate

I have tried all sorts of ways to steal a march on time with parsnips. I now take the pragmatic view that they are in the ground for so long, that waiting a week or two more to sow them doesn't really matter in the long run.

So April it is for me too... usually around the middle. Germination seems pretty good around then.

And I learnt a few weeks ago when complaining about the strange tail-less parsnips I had, that the root can be seriously damaged by sowing in modules and transplanting. So would recommend following advice of sowing in situ after germination (if you want) on paper towel - but don't wait too long!

I've never had much success with parsnips, they are my nemesis, lack of water in the germination stage for me didn't help last year. I'm giving the seeds stuck to tape method/ product this year, so fingers crossed and bit of water.

Last year I sowed some in March and a few actually germinated, the rest I sowed in early May, they were perfect by early November.

You can lay strips of wood from pallets along your drills, this maintains  the moisture in the soil beneath. I tried it a few years ago but didn't check for germination often enough and when I did check they had germinated and died under the 'planks'. It seems to be a good method if you remember to check often for germination.

I had consistently poor germination for years until I twigged the reason and delayed sowing them until well into May. Since then, I get the same germination rates as with any other vegetable seed
