Apple peeler gadgets ?
« on: August 21, 2010, 19:22 »
I,m toying with the idea of buying an apple peeling contraption as i have a tree groaning under the weight of fruit, are they any good ?
A peeler / corer would be good but i want to avoid the spiral slicing option as i prefer chunkier pieces.
Do you have a solid aluminium or cast iron machine with a clamp fitting you would recommend or do i save my pennies and stay with the sharp knife.

I like a good gadget if they work. :)

Problem solved, i cut down a table fork to fit in the power take off from my electric mincer.
Stick an apple on the fork switch on mincer and hold a swing potato peeler on the apple. :)
Peels an apple real fast!
Bring on the apple mountain!

I`m sure Heath Robinson would approve. :)

I have one of those cast apple peelers/corers/spiral jobbies that I got from Lakeland plastics years ago. They work great on uniform shaped apples but on my misshapen ones you still have to do a spot of hand peeling.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Luckily my James Grieve apples are a good round shape with just the occasional dimple. :)

Nearly got a double entendre there, I fear!

I have 2 crank-type apple peelers. One is a newer aluminum job that is okay but I find I don't use it often as the blade arm is useless. The best is an antique one I bought for display but ended up using it all the time. Only problem now is the blade is dull from so much use so I must sharpen it and look for some sort of replacement. It works a treat and is worth the $10 I paid for it years ago. As Joy said, sometimes dips and hollows can't be peeled, but mostly the peelers do a fab job. We can get through a bushel in about 20 minutes, one person cranking, the other person trimming and slicing. So when you do 5 bushels, it saves a lot of time.  8)
