FIrst day at allotment
« on: February 27, 2009, 16:51 »
Well, managed to get down to the allotment for the first time since getting the keys, work and weather held me up. Took a few pics of what greeted me when I managed to get through the gate.  Looks like I have a bit of work to do  ::)

Crikey - I went through that last year. I know how it feels.
Might be a good idea to start clearing and burning before it all starts greening up.
Best of luck - a little bit at a time

Good God! I thought mine was bad!!
You've really got your work cut out there!
Hopefully under all that there will be a cracking plot and you'll be surprised how quickly it gets done once the weather is kinder. You wouldnt recognise my plot from when I got it last year.  Litte and often seems to have worked for me.  Good Luck, and dont forget the future pics  :D

Plenty of potential there MC. Do they supply a skip or are you allowed to have bonfires? Once you start clearing it you'll start to see the magic emerging...
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I sympathise - I really do! How about getting a bunch of friends down to the lottie and have a real sorting out session and a bonfire (if you're allowed) - or get it ready for burning if it's too wet, then unpack the chairs, get the drinks and takeaways out and celebrate the opening of your first lottie!!!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Have a bonfire and then ask for forgiveness if you were not allowed, much easier than asking for permission!

Blimey Moonchild, I don't envy you, you seem really positive though...Just think of the satisfaction when you get it cleared... :)

It's funny how different sites do things differently, I took mine on in October it was covered in Brambles and stuff, but they cleared and rotavated it for me..

We're going up tomorrow to do some work too.. and I can't wait.. :D

Good Luck - you're gonna love it when it's done.  If there are loads of nettles they will make a good start to the compost heap - just don't put the roots or seeds in.

:( I can deal with nature's mess, but human mess really p****s me off.
I wouldn't burn old timber, you don't know what it was treated with, and the old tanalised timber contains arsenic.  >:(
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

cover what you can with thick plastic sheeting,,,this will  kill off all weeds and stop them from growing ,untill you can mange that area,
do it section by section.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and onions....
