Hens eating eggs
« on: September 09, 2011, 18:47 »
Im so mad. Just discovered yesterday one or maybe two of my hens eating their eggs

Does any one have any advice on how to stop this.

I don't really want to cull them. This would have to be a last resort.

Please help as they are putting of the other hens laying in the nest.

are the eggs hard shelled or soft shelled? Are you sure it is hens eating them often magpies have been known to sneak in and eat eggs.
One way to stop it is to use roll away nest boxes.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Do you know which hens are doing this (and if so can you separate them from the others in some way?)  I have never had this problem but understand that if you put a fake egg in (solid one) then the shock of pecking it can put them off.  I have also heard that covering a hard boiled egg with something unpleasant tasting but not harmful (like mustard) can also do the trick
Good Luck!

Are the shells soft?  If so make sure they have oyster shell available which will harden up the shells.

I have had this and never managed to crack it although it is worth trying the Mustard or chilli filled egg and the hard eggs - I also tried a few Golf balls. This did help a bit. The roll away nest box was good too. You basically make the floor of your nest boxes slope with a bit at the back for the eggs to drop into.

My hen had very soft egg shells and I could not stop this so the eggs were just too fragile and would roll into the back and smash.

She did only ever eat her own egg though and as she is a pet chicken she is still with me. She has stopped laying now and just gets fat and bosses the other girls around.

Good luck.

Bev

p.s Make sure they have a good source of grit but be careful if you use calcium supplements as that gave one of my other hens problems with gout.
