I  have grown these for the first time this year and they have pods on them but how do I know when they are ready to pick?

They get really big i picked some of mine too early and even though the pods looked huge the beans were tiny

depends how you like to eat them, some people eat them small and eat the whole pod, i personally wait till they are bigger and just eat the beans

We pick them when the pods are somewhat 'bumpy' and you can feel the individual beans pressing against the inside of the pods and the beans inside are still green.  I believe they also say that the pods should have started to drop downwards ie pointing at the soil rather than the sky.

feel the girth!   ::)  Yes you can feel the beans inside but don't wait till they are really big, better young and tender I think.
