i have no stand pipe or electricity on me allotment.
watering is a nightmare as the dyke behind me is stagnant.also dificult to access.at the mo i use a bucket with a legnth of rope.
is there any good cheap hand pumps available that really work?
seen some cheap second had cast iron pumps but do they work or are they only for show.

I have no experience of pumps, but as you have no electricity, look for petrol or 2-stroke. Solar / rechargeable will probably be more trouble than worth, IMO.

Received a hand-pump this week (bilge pump), once I get some hose for it I'll be testing it next week for raising water from the river.

I can say that a proper cast iron hand-pump does work though, at least with semi-regular use to keep the leather supple the elderly iron hand-pump at the in-laws has worked very well to raise water from a well for many years.  But most of the cheap metal hand-pumos on ebay appear to be decorative replicas rather than proper working pumps.

What's the head height you need to raise?
